Camping at Phish Dick's is canceled. Blame the plague-infected prairie dogs.
In which we grapple with the plague.
Hey, it’s @moneyries and this is the Jam Sandwich.
Like the lot of ya I’ve been watching with increasing, I dunno, dread?, that fans might once again face a cancelation thanks to mother nature sending something freaky our way.
For Curveball, it was the water. Now for Dick’s, it’s the dirt. Specifically, what’s in it — plague-infected fleas!
The buggers have apparently dug into the prairie dog colonies that are scattered in the fields around Dick’s, and so, the band announced this morning, camping is canceled. This followed the local health department’s advise to keep fans parked on the asphalt.
I wrote about it for CNN (yes hi I have a day job there) and the story just published. I’m sharing a portion below. Go on and read the whole thing if you’d like.

Camping is canceled at Phish's Colorado concerts. Blame the plague-infected prairie dogs

The good news: A weekend of Phish concerts will go on as scheduled at a soccer stadium outside Denver.
The bad: There will be no overnight camping. Thank the plague for that.
Yes, that plague, the Black Death, the one that killed an estimated 60% of the medieval European population and, centuries later, millions more. Even for a fanbase long adjusted to curveballs, the situation unfolding in the prairie dog colonies that surround Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado, is a new one.
Fans had been dreading the announcement that Phish made Tuesday, saying camping would not be permitted due to an outbreak of plague among the prairie dogs.
Health officials in Colorado said Tuesday that the affected areas would remain closed through at least September 6 as officials continue insecticide treatments. Monte Deatrich, environmental health manager with Tri-Country Health, estimated that 3,000 people would be affected by the shutdown.
Deatrich said there have been no human cases related to the prairie dog plague.
Phish acknowledged "the tremendous inconvenience" this caused and offered a portal for plague refugees seeking a place to stay.
Dick's Sporting Goods Park has not responded to requests for further comment.
As you may have heard, there have been ongoing cases of plague in prairie dog colonies in the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge this summer. Fortunately, the Tri-County Health Department has advised that Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (DSGP) is safe to host Phish’s concerts over Labor Day weekend. While there have been no confirmed cases of plague on site at DSPG, as an extra measure of caution, the Health Department has restricted parking at the venue to asphalt lots — concertgoers will not be allowed to park on unpaved lots or grass.
As a result, we are sorry to say that there will be no overnight camping allowed for this year’s shows. All camping tickets and RV tickets (and associated service charges) will be automatically refunded within the next few days. We recognize the tremendous inconvenience this may cause for those who had planned on camping. Our friends at CID have created a special portal with listings of nearby hotels including some with discounted weekend rates for Phish fans.
While DSGP has significant asphalt parking on site, off-site parking will need to be utilized to accommodate all concertgoers. We will be providing free off-site parking and free shuttles at nearby locations, and we will be notifying ticket holders of parking and shuttle details once they are finalized over the next week.
Also, please note that due to these restrictions, vending will not be permitted on site as the area traditionally set aside for vending is no longer useable.
Thanks very much for your cooperation — our goal is to make sure these concerts go off as smoothly as possible while preserving the safety of all attendees.
Thanks for reading.
